“A lot of people think when you get shot you go to the hospital, they fix you up, you go home and you’re OK,” she said. “That’s really not the case. Trauma is a roller coaster.” There’s the immediate physical injury and mental and emotional trauma of being shot. But also there are long-haul effects.
A June 2021 report from the U.S. Department of Education found that, from the 2015-16 through 2017-18 school years, there was a 5% spike in the number of on-campus students arrests and a 12% increase in police answering calls to campuses.
Is there a need for trauma-informed training for police officers? Let me share an example of a situation where the outcome could have been very different if the responding officer had been trauma-informed.
Trauma-informed does not necessarily translate to implementing and sustaining trauma-informed care. Being informed is an important step in the process, but not the end step. The end step is implementing trauma care in a consistent and sustained way.
The philosophy of trauma-informed care is becoming more and more embedded in the philosophies and practices of child-serving agencies.
