  2. Sadly, Mr. Keats outlines all of the entries into what should be called the labyrinth of incarceration, which as he recounts often begins with a juvenile record. Sadly, that’s not where it should begin. If the system was focused on education and remediation instead of punishment and humiliation, housing, employment and continued education would all become part of the re-entry process.

    Not only are minority youth targeted for arrest; they are poorly represented in the criminal justice system, often encouraged by lawyers to plead out cases which surely will leave them with a criminal record. Given the choice between extended court cases and jail stays, uninformed youth gladly opt for time served and what they think are minor felonies. As Mr. Keats points out, through inadequate protections, nothing is so minor if it is going to follow you out the door and influence your future.
